FAMtrac Counsellor Training
FAMtrac offers a unique opportunity for Psychology graduates.
About the FAMtrac Counsellor Training:
This course offers the opportunity to be able to register with the ASCHP (https://www.aschp.net/index.htm to read more on the Council) as a Specialist Wellness Counsellor (https://www.aschp.net/designations.html to read more on the designation).
Many psychology graduates find it challenging to register, apply for Master's, or find employment in their chosen field. This program is aimed at providing you with the necessary training, skills and practical experience to register with the ASCHP; build a portfolio of evidence for further application to Master's level or to add to your CV; and network with professionals working in the mental health field.
The following three components will form part of this four month program:
-
Training
-
Supervision
-
Practical
Training
The first four weeks of this program consists of both classroom and online training. Our experiential courses will include the following:
-
Counselling Skills
-
Couple Work
-
Working with Domestic Violence
-
Working with Trauma
-
Working with grief and bereavement
-
Suicide Prevention
-
Ethical considerations in counselling
You will have the opportunity to not only learn the theory of each of these counselling issues but also practice the skills learned and work through case discussions.
Supervision
FAMSA Western Cape has been providing professional supervision for more than 20 years.
A very important component of this program is our Clinical Supervision. Interns will be seen weekly for supervision by an experienced Clinical Psychologist or Registered Counsellor (HPCSA), as well as receiving regular group supervision and support.
Practical
One of the requirements to register with the ASCHP as Specialist Wellness Counsellor is to gain 100 hours of experience. You will get the opportunity to gain practical experience as an Intern Counsellor at one of our FAMSA offices. Practical experience will include working in our Intake Department as well as practical counselling hours and a possible project.
Is this program right for me?
This program provides you with the skills, mentoring and practical experience in order to register with the ASCHP (please refer to the council for more information on them). In addition you can build a portfolio of evidence which can add to a Master's application or your CV. This program does however not lead to a registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), please refer to the HPCSA website for more information on registration requirements. The training program aims to provide an alternative opportunity for many psychology graduates that find themselves in possession of a degree but cannot practice counselling under a council or study further.
